  • Long stirring spoon
  • Measuring cups
  • Kitchen timer
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Tall serving glasses
  • Ice cube tray / ice

Ingredients

For the Sweet Tea
  • 4 cups cold water for brewing
  • 4 cups cold water for diluting
  • 3 –4 family-size black tea bags or 6–8 regular size Luzianne or Lipton recommended
  • 1 cup granulated white sugar adjust to taste
  • ¼ tsp baking soda prevents bitterness & cloudiness
  • as needed ice cubes for serving
Optional Garnishes
  • 4 –5 lemon slices for garnish & rim
  • 5 –6 fresh mint sprigs
  • 2 fresh peach slices for Peach Sweet Tea variation
  • For Healthy Sweet Tea Sugar-Free Option
  • ½ tsp liquid stevia or monk fruit sweetener same amount as sugar

Instructions

  • Boil the water: Bring 4 cups of cold water to a rolling boil in a medium saucepan over high heat. Remove from heat as soon as it reaches a full boil do not let it over-boil.
  • Steep the tea bags: Add 3–4 family-size tea bags to the hot (off-heat) water. Steep for exactly 3–5 minutes. Set a timer do not guess.
  • Remove bags & add baking soda: Gently lift and remove the tea bags never squeeze them. Immediately stir in ¼ teaspoon of baking soda. This neutralizes bitter tannins and prevents cloudiness.
  • Dissolve the sugar (most important step): While the tea is still HOT, add 1 cup of granulated sugar. Stir continuously and vigorously for at least 60 seconds until every sugar crystal is fully dissolved. Check by looking at the bottom of the pot no grains should remain.
  • Transfer to pitcher & dilute: Pour the hot sweetened tea concentrate into a 1-gallon glass pitcher. Add the remaining 4 cups of cold water and stir gently to combine. This creates the right flavor strength and speeds cooling.
  • Cool to room temperature: Leave the pitcher uncovered at room temperature for 20–30 minutes until no longer warm. Do not place hot tea directly in the refrigerator this causes cloudiness.
  • Refrigerate & chill: Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving. For best flavor, chill overnight Sweet Tea always tastes better on day 2.
  • Serve over ice & garnish: Fill tall glasses generously with ice. Pour chilled Sweet Tea over ice. Garnish with a lemon slice on the rim and a sprig of fresh mint. Serve immediately.

Notes

Never squeeze the tea bags always remove gently. Squeezing releases bitter tannins that ruin the flavor.
Baking soda is the secret just ¼ tsp prevents cloudiness and neutralizes astringency for a smoother drink.
Steep time matters 3–5 minutes maximum. Over-steeping is the #1 cause of bitter Sweet Tea.
Cool before refrigerating placing hot tea in the fridge causes a chemical reaction that turns the tea cloudy and dull.
Use filtered water tap water with strong chlorine kills the delicate floral notes of black tea. Use filtered water whenever possible.
Storage: Keeps fresh in a sealed glass pitcher in the refrigerator for 5–7 days. Glass is preferred over plastic plastic absorbs flavors over time.
Make ahead: Sweet Tea actually tastes better after 12–24 hours as the flavors meld and deepen. Perfect for parties and meal prep.
Best tea brand: Luzianne Orange Pekoe is blended specifically for iced tea and produces the clearest, least bitter result. Lipton is an excellent second choice.
